It was this scene, that made Andre realize not only what he was about to do to Oscar was wrong, but he realized was also at fault for the position she was in as a soldier and contemplating her femininty and masculinity.
Like her father, he was partially responsible for forcing Oscar to join the guard in the first place and have her live as a man and have her live the hard life as a solider, where she never chose her path and he took part in hurting her like her father did. From having her try to suck up to nobles she despised and sword fight her to have her do as her father and the King commanded.
It made him realize that he forced the rose to be a lilac for years, and her crush on Fersen made Andre realize the awful truth that he took part in making the rose a lilac himself. And in the end, because of her father raising her as a man and Andre taking part in it, Oscar got hurt badly.
